Who is Grayson-Carroll-Wythe Mutual?
Grayson-Carroll-Wythe Mutual Insurance Company is a Virginia property insurer founded in 1896 as the Grayson County Farmers Mutual Benevolent Fire Insurance Company. Based in southwest Virginia, it writes homeowners, farm, commercial fire, and church insurance across the Commonwealth and is owned for the benefit of its policyholders as a mutual company.
Grayson-Carroll-Wythe Mutual Insurance Company (GCW Mutual) is a regional mutual focused on property insurance for Virginians. It emphasizes community roots, agent partnerships, and coverage for homes, farms, churches, and small commercial fire risks across the state.
Unlike national multi-line carriers, GCW Mutual’s company specialty is Virginia property. An affiliated agency helps local customers access auto, flood, and life products the mutual itself is not authorized to write.

History
The company was founded February 24, 1896, as the Grayson County Farmers Mutual Benevolent Fire Insurance Company by Eli Hale, John M. McLean, Hardin Cox, James D. Perkins, and George W. Gilham. It originally wrote fire and lightning coverage in Grayson and Carroll Counties.
Over time the charter expanded, the name evolved, and in 1977 the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Wythe County merged in — creating Grayson-Carroll-Wythe Mutual Insurance Company and adding Wytheville branch operations.
Later amendments expanded coverages and policy types. In 1997 the company opened an insurance agency so local customers could obtain auto, and later flood and life, through partner markets the mutual itself does not write.

Who GCW Mutual serves
